Year 2, Week 8 Wrapup
I was snacking a little more than normal this week, and I fell completely off the wagon on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. I still ended up with my average down .2 pounds for the week, so it wasn't a complete and total loss.
We were down in Green Valley for most of the 24th, so I ran my tempo run down there. The forecast was for a high of 48, so I brought a long sleeve shirt, but the temperature was closer to 70 by the time I went out. Consequently, I was very hot. I got so hot in the long sleeve shirt that I actually took it off and carried it for the rest of the run. When I first tried running in 2001, I only remember running sans shirt once, on a particularly hot summer day. Back then, I wouldn't have considered doing it again because I was really embarrassed about it. I was pretty fat, so there was a lot of extra jiggle with every step, and I don't feel that it's kind to force that vision on people.
Nowadays, I'm considerably leaner up top. However, there's still a lot of reasons why someone would not want to view my naked chest. For starters, it's very pale white, although that could be remedied by the sun if I made shirtless running a habit. The drawback with that is that extra sun exposure would exacerbate problem #2: I'm covered in moles. If you could look past all that, there's still the problem that even though I don't have a lot of fat under my skin, there's zero definition in my muscles, so it doesn't help to be able to see their flaccid puniness more clearly. And to top it all off, I have exactly the wrong amount of chest hair. It's enough to put me squarely into the category of "hairy man", which is generally undesirable, while not being enough to actually be a hirsute badge of virility, like it would be if I had one of those Sasquatch-like pelts. Plus it's all wiry and dark, which stands out in stark contrast to the pale whiteness previously discussed.
So, I'm probably not going to be making shirtless running a habit, even though it did make the run a ton easier that day. The whole time I was doing it, I kept thinking how weird it was that it was Christmas Eve, and here I was running in just shorts and shoes.
On Christmas Day, we had our second annual Family Fun Run, although we could only muster up 5 people for it this time. However, this time was a full 2 miles non-stop, not the run/walk that we did last year, so that's progress.
I was getting tired of my Forerunner not beeping 3/4 of the time, so I took advantage of a recent Costco sale to upgrade to the 305. My brother Tyler has been running the last couple of months, and needs to keep up with the training in order to do Ogden with us in May. So, for Christmas and to help him not have any excuses, I passed down the old Forerunner to him, along with a couple of tech shirts, my winter running pants, and a big winter tech pullover thing. The clothes are all too big for me now, and it's my hope that they will all be too big for him soon as well.
The marathon is less than a week away. From the looks of the course, I'm guessing that it's a bit hillier than Park City, but offset a bit by the lower altitude. So, I'm going to call the difficulty the same. I'm definitely a lot faster than I was at Park City. I'm fifteen pounds lighter, too, for whatever that might be worth. I've also made sure I do a small amount of hill training every week. So, I feel prepared, but without any read on how well I'll do. I'm 99% sure I'll beat my last time, but by how much? And, more importantly, will I beat Oprah (4:29:20)? Only time will tell.
(Totally off-topic aside: I just wrote that last sentence above ("Only time will tell") and thought, "Hey, that was a great Asia song". Since I have that CD, and it's in my iTunes library, I just hit command-space to bring up the Spotlight (built-in system-wide Mac OS X search utility) search field, type "only time will tell", hit the return key to select the top hit, and immediately hear the song coming out of iTunes. Total elapsed time from having this random thought to actually hearing the song play: Less than three seconds. These are the kinds of things for which I thank my Heavenly Father in my nightly prayers.)
Scott's coming down to Las Vegas for the marathon (it was his idea, after all), and most of my family has now committed to coming along as well. Two of my brothers signed up for the 5k, and then the two of them signed up a third one, Steven (the cocky one) to run as well. So, I'm curious to see how well they all do, although I'm fairly sure that Steven will actually win. I swear that kid would be an amazing runner if he would ever actually do it. The only times he's ever run more than 2 miles in his life are the two times I challenged him to race. He ran the family fun run with us on Christmas, and at the end I tried to outsprint him. He blew past me like I was an old man or something. He obviously doesn't have the endurance to keep up with me for long distances, but he definitely has way more raw speed than I do. He might not have the right body to be a sprinter, but he definitely has the body for distance running. I think if he just worked on it a little bit and joined the track team for the little bit he has left of high school, he could be a star middle distance runner.

Year 2, Week 7 Wrapup
Fairly uneventful this week. The only real change of note is that I ate a ton. Most people overeat during the holidays, and I'm no exception. As recently as a couple of weeks ago I was thinking to myself, "I'll just eat the normal amounts I would always eat when Christmas comes around. I can't even imagine myself being tempted to the point where not doing so would prove difficult."
Turns out that I am a weak, weak man, and there are many of my favorite things to be had around Christmas, in many plentiful forms. This week included two big Christmas parties and many treats sitting around at work. Next week will be much of the same. Couple that with a sharp taper in the running schedule and I'm bound to see some significant reversal of the recent weight loss next week.

Year 2, Week 6 Wrapup
It was cold and wet on Monday, and I was feeling a little sick so I skipped the run that day. I had extra time on Tuesday, so I pushed Wednesday's speedwork up to Tuesday. Then, on Wednesday, I was going to make up Monday's run, but we went to dinner with Andrew and everyone instead. So, I added another mile to Thursday's run. Got that? I ended up only a mile short of what my planned weekly mileage, so I guess it's all okay.
I did Tuesday's speedwork down at the track. There were maybe a dozen of us on the track, all running the correct direction (counter-clockwise). Then, about halfway through my run, this middle-aged guy in a full sweatsuit shows up and starts running the other way. I don't know if he's a jackhole that was just trying to be different or if he was retarded. Either way, he was running in my lane. As I would come up on him, I would speed up and he'd eventually switch lanes to get out of the way. Then, since he's going the other way, I would only go another half lap before coming across him again, only to find him still in my lane. Finally, after about ten times of this, I broke down and just moved over a few lanes, only to find that he's somehow moved into my new lane as well. If I wasn't trying to stick to a pace, I would have eventually just stopped him and asked, "Dude?!"
This week's long run was the dreaded 20 miler. There was a bit of a psychological barrier to overcome here because I never had done a 20 mile training run successfully. The previous marathon training had two 20 mile runs, and both of them ended badly. I would get about 18 miles into it, then pretty much fall apart and have to sort of walk/stumble the rest of the way. This one went totally fine, though. Yeah, the last two miles were a little tougher and more grueling than the first two, but it was way easier than the previous 20 mile runs, even though I was maintaining a per mile pace that was a full minute faster than those previous runs. Yeah, the temperature difference between July and December might have a lot to do with it, but I'm taking as much of the credit for myself as I can.
The only glitch in the long run was that I completely misestimated where the turnaround point would be, and I stashed my second gatorade about 3/4 miles past that point. As I got closer and realized how the mileage was working out, I was faced with the choice of turning around and skipping the second gatorade, or continuing on but then finishing the run too far from the car. It was pretty hot, so I decided to keep going until I got the gatorade, but I was still almost 2 miles from the car by the time I finished the 20 miles. I normally try to plan these so I end about a half mile away to give me a nice cool-down walk, but instead I had a nice cool-down walk, followed by a miserably long bonus cool-down walk.
The real hero of the week is BODYGLIDE™ (not to be confused with Astroglide). I've had the usual nipple chafing and thigh rubbing, along with some other chafed regions on all these long runs. The thigh rubbing is not as big of a deal now that my thighs are not so big, but it's not gone totally. So, I finally picked up a stick of this stuff last week. I rubbed some on my nipples, between my thighs, and some on some... other... places. When it was all over, I was not chafed anywhere. Bravo, BODYGLIDE™.

Year 2, Week 5 Wrapup
32 total miles this week. I'm topping out at a little bit higher weekly mileage than the last marathon training, but not by too much. Next week will be the peak, at around 33-34, then tapering after that.
My long run this week was not particularly difficult running-wise. I was sore and tired by the end, but never struggling or anything. What would have been an otherwise great run was marred by a few miserable annoyances.
For starters, I forgot my hat, and didn't realize it until I was about a mile into the run. If I had been running from home, I would have just gone back. But, I had driven out to the Rillito river trail, and it would have taken at least 45 minutes round trip to drive home and get it. The hat serves the dual function of sun shade and sweat band, and I needed both of those things.
I planned to wake up at 7 to run, but had a really hard time falling asleep the night before. So, when it came time to wake up, I thoughtfully reconsidered, then went back to sleep until 10. By the time I got to the trail, it was 11, leaving me to do my run in the middle of the day's heat. So, while it wasn't nearly as bad as the summer runs, it was mid 70s by the time I was done, so I was definitely doing a lot of sweating. With no hat, it was running down into my eyes, then drying on my face into a stinging salt crust. I was having to waste valuable time stopping at drinking fountains just to rinse my face off. That'll teach me. It is likely that I won't forget my hat ever again.
I've never been able to use ear buds when I run, because my ear canals are too big or something. The ear buds just bounce around and then fall right out. So, I usually run with a dopey pair of over the ear headphones, like it's 1985 or something. I had been intending to buy a pair of running earbuds with ear clips, but hadn't gotten around to it. Then, I got lucky enough to get a bag of crap in the last Wootoff. Amongst other goodies like a busted camera, a bluetooth headset, and a Zune were a pair of cheap Chinese earbuds that were larger than normal. I thought these might fit better, so I wore them on all my night runs this week, and they did indeed stay in my ears. Turns out that running at night in the cold is different than running in the day in the heat. Apparently my ears are bigger in the day, or the extra sweat makes the difference. Either way, the stupid things kept falling out of my ears, and I had to readjust them several times each mile.
I had stashed two frozen gatorades on the way, and the first one was still slushy when I got to it. I didn't get to the other one for about 2 1/2 hours, though, and it was lukewarm by the time I found it. Kind of nasty.
